Adega do Moucho

Based in the small Galician town of Ribadavia, Adega do Mouch is a small producer of singular focus. Established by Francisco García Pérez in 1995 with a first vintage produced in 2000, the story began with Francisco’s great-great-grandfather, Rafael Santoro, who was the first winemaker in the Ribeiro region to bottle, label and sell wine from his own vineyards. The family left the village shortly thereafter, abandoning the vines. Francisco returned to the family home in 1993, replanted the land to vines and, with a young local winemaker, José Manuel Martínez Juste, sought to produce wine in the legacy of his great-great-grandfather. Adega do Moucho makes one wine in miniscule quantities: focussing on Treixadura, the first vintage produced 300 bottles, with yields varying to highs of 450 dozen in 2017 to lows of 125 cases in 2020. The reason for this is a stern commitment to quality. In the vineyard, only minimal treatments are carried out, with no insecticides applied, with several passages carried out during harvest to select only the very ripest bunches or parts of bunches. Grapes are sorted to ensure only the best are used, with cold maceration followed by pneumatic pressing, before fermentation and ageing in new French oak. The result is a masterful wine of great beauty.
