Cattleya

Growing up in Colombia, where vineyards are virtually non-existent, Bibiana González Rave’s exposure was limited to a few stolen sips of her father’s wine, but this was enough to sell her the dream of becoming a winemaker. After completing a degree in Chemical Engineering and Business she moved to Bordeaux to study viticulture and oenology, thereafter, working at the likes of Château Haut-Brion, Michel & Stéphane Ogier and Domaine du Devevey in Burgundy. Bibiana’s first vintage in California was 2004 working with La Crema, Au Bon Climat and Qupé before Lynmar Estate, where she was winemaker from 2009 through early 2012. Then came the time to go it alone and Cattleya was born. Named after Colombia’s national symbol, the Cattleya Trinae orchard, the project is focussed on sourcing Californian fruit of exceptional quality, utilising sensitive winemaking to express the latent purity and finesse of the grapes and site. Soon after establishing Cattleya, she was named one of Wine Enthusiast’s first “40 Under 40: America’s Tastemakers” in 2014. Concentrating on single vineyard parcels and appellation blends under the Cattleya brand, Bibiana launched Alma de Cattleya to produce wines from the broader California region.
