Costers del Priorat

Costers del Priorat was founded in 2000 by a group of winemakers and industry professionals enchanted by the magic of the rugged Priorat region of Catalonia. Named after the steep slopes of brittle slate underpinned by licorella soils, the operation is based out of a 15th century Carthusian farmhouse located in Les Solanes at the southern tip of the region. Over nine vineyards across eight villages, a range of stunning wines are made that reflect in starkly different ways the high altitudes, rugged landscapes, extreme aspects and old vines that make Priorat unique. Production currently stands at around 90,000 litres per year, concentrated on a range of blends from across the region, as well as single vineyard expressions, made from traditional varieties including Garnatxa Blanco and Rojo as well as Samsó (Cinsault or Carignan), with vines dating back to the 1930s. Winemaking is gentle and focussed on communicating the terroir, with a variety of refill barrels, large oak foudres and terracotta amphorae in use.
