St. Supery
St. Supéry was created in the 1970s by French winemaking icon Robert Skalli, who left the family’s estate in Corsica with the vision of producing world-class wine in California. This was an exciting time for the Skalli family: alongside his uncle and two cousins, Robert was building a winery in France at the same time as setting up St. Supéry. Shortly after purchasing a 1,500-acre cattle ranch in Dollarhide, Robert bought 56 acres in Rutherford, where the winery was built and continues to stand today. Opened in 1989, the vineyards were planted to traditional Bordeaux varietals, with a particular focus on Cabernet Sauvignon. In the early 1990s, Michel Rolland was brought in to improve the quality of the wines: an upward trajectory that continues, with the winery under the ownership of Chanel since 2015. Sustainability is a focus, with close to 1,000 acres around the vineyards left fallow and peppered with lakes providing habitats for local wildlife, and many measures in the winery—such as recycling all water—earning them a Napa Valley Green certification. As one of a handful of wineries that make 100% estate-grown wines, their control of fruit quality and sustainable marks out St. Supéry as unique in Napa Valley.
